Mt. Shasta Brewing Company

I had a meeting planned with Vaune to look over his bottle designs and settle on a product identity. He unfortunately could not make it due to weather problems. I would recommend using 'Mt. Shasta Brewing'tm and/or 'Mt. Shasta Beers'tm and/or 'Mt. Shasta Brewing Company'tm for the brand name and use generic names for the beers.

Siskiyou County Economic Development Council ( SCEDC )

I had the opportunity to demonstrate GotWiki to the board meetings of the SCEDC this afternoon. They had me scheduled for a twenty minute slot starting at 4:15pm. I took my projector and laptop to the meeting. Before the meeting I created a bunch of business cards and a report sheet to collect contact information. I demonstrated the main advantages of using GotWiki over other website management methods. The over all response was very good. The board voted to use my GotWiki service for their main website.

I also had a brief look at an other project the SCEDC is involved in. 'mypacficwest.com' is an commerce site that sells products made in and around Siskiyou county. Their site is split into two parts. Each part is serviced from a different server. They have an informational/magazine that is served from a Cold fusion based system and the shopping section that is served from a fixed IP and used AbleCommerce software running on an NT server.

Link City

I added loads of new links to my Links Page. Check out your government dollars at work at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration website. They have an example of a basic production television and the costs of each component.

Lighting Investigations

I spent most of today investigating stage lighting systems. The DMX512 lighting control specification is quickly becoming the standard digital way to control lights in clubs, theaters and many television production studios. A DMX controller is connected to one or more DMX dimmer packs that supply power to the actual lights. Daisy chain connections are made via 5pin XLR cables. The last device must be terminated. Behringer has a very cool controller for under $200 dollars and a 4 channel dimmer packs are available for $150.

The least expensive lighting units available are called cans. They come in a number of sizes and all are used with self reflective bulbs. They are very limited in the control department. Hy Tech Gear is selling the Par38 cans for only $15 each and the much large Par64 is under $30.

COMM 35 Second Lab Session

I was not very impressed with the instructor nor one of the key students. They spent the best part of an hour trying yo hook up some basic video equipment. With a little help we got it all working in a fashion. Next up a student with many years of experience with the character generator gave the lab students some basic instruction. But was unwilling to give other students an oppertunity to try out the equipment for themselves.

Local Geek

Being the local geek has it's pluses and minuses. Today I helped fix another WindowsXP computer with the remote procedure call (RPC) bug/virus. Now it's a pain to try and do a critical windows update when the virus that exposes the bug tries to prevent the updater from working. The virus would shut down windows within a few minutes of connecting to the Internet. That makes it hard to download just about anything that might help. The good uses it that Microsoft have a patch that can be downloaded and ran to fix the problem.

Linking and Thinking

Another lazy day filled with work! I spent most of the day eating chocolate, browsing the web, watch nothing that interesting on television and adding some content to this website.

My Movie Page now has little posters of the movies along with my personal ratings. I plan to write little reviews to go with the little pictures. I 'stole' the poster images from the web. I hope and belief I am covered by fair use since it's not commercial and I am reviewing the movies. Still I will wait for the 'cease and desist letter' before worrying about it too much.

I added a new section called Links Page to collect my wandering's on the world wide web. It will be updated at random and link's will be added grouped by the date they are added. Perhaps some day after many have been collected I will arrange them into groups based on subject.

28 Days Later

Over hyped scary movie that was well done for a low budget movie. I did enjoy '28 Days Later' for it's desolate scenes of London very haunting as it reminded me of my first visit. I went there by bus from Scotland. After, 7 hours of travel we arrived at 5am on Sunday morning. It was already daylight and the center of London was a ghost town. I mean there was no cars, no people and no activity of any sort. I walked down the middle of the road in stunned disbelief by the quietness of one of the worlds busiest cities. Fast forward many years, it was a trip to see the same scenario played out on the big screen. If your like apocalyptic sci-fi movies then check out '28 Days Later'. You get to see many of the sights of London without the crowds.

Classical Guitar

World class solo classical guitarist Brad Richter stopped off in Yreka for an excellent performance of his stage concert. One hundred and twenty people turned up for the acoustic delights. Brad introduced each piece with delightful stories concerning their nature and origin. This added to the enjoyment of the music as one was able to image many of the songs based on his description. Read more about Brad at his website http://www.bradrichter-guitar.com/

More Pictures Added

I added some of my older pictures that were taken using a Sony TRV-900 digital video camera. The pictures date back many years.

Despite shooting at only 640x480 resolution progressive scan, I think the camera did a decent job.

Mona Lisa Smile

That evening Nate, Shirley and I went into Mount Shasta to watch 'Mona Lisa Smile' at the cinema. We were disappointed to find out that the theater was nearly full to capacity and that we could not get seating together. We skipped the movie and headed over to Lalo's for much needed food. Nate took ill and went home with Shirley. I stayed and had a good chat with Dale while eating some of Lalo's fine roasted jalapenos. I asked for a couple and he brung a plate of atleast 10. The first few bites took my breathe away. Then I got into the swing. They were all finshed with a little help.

Shirley came back to collect me and we both went and saw the 9pm showing of the Movie. I enjoyed the movie despite it's gentle laid back approach.

COMM 35 at COS

I signed up for the COMM 35 lab at the College of the Siskiyous and attended the first lab today. The lab is designed to encourage students to get involved in public access television in the community. The first day was a very high level orientation session. It lacked any real detail or focus. Two video productions were shown that displayed previous students efforts. The first was for a summer camp for children that's held every year at COS. The other video was from a student of the COMM 35 class. They were both below what I would have expected.

After the lab, Linda Neal and I went over to MCTV15's Studio174 and I shared some knowledge of the studio production process. Somehow I missed Ray, Audra and a photographer from the local paper!

MCTV15 Tasks

I went into MCTV15 early this morning with two simple tasks in mind.
  • Free up some disk space on the firewire hard drive.
  • Install networking software and hardware between the office computer and the NLE computer.
The first task was easy once I got over the need to keep old finished projects laying around. I went from only 13Gb free to nearly 95Gb free within half an hour. I still have two projects on the drive that need to be completed. A final edit of 'Murder of the Rails' and a first edit of the poetry's video.

The second task proved to be more of a challenge. The office computer is an old 90MHz Windows 98 machine. It has built-up ethernet and the software drivers were already installed. I hooked up the ethernet cables thru a cheap hub to the Windows XP based NLE computer. No matter what I tried I could not get the two computer's to talk to each other. Since I was pressed for time, next week I will bring in my 98 disks and reinstall the drivers, falling that I will simply make the office computer the only one that can access the web via the dial-up account.

It's a Joke!

I read a very badly produced report on a couple of website of local interest. Names not given to protect the guilty. Much of this report could have been created by a semi-intelligent person without ever having looked at the sites in question.

Fast Track Public Access

MCTV15 Studio174 stepped up it's production quality one more notch with it's Neva Barnett production of RealTV. Two camera production with a full production crew of six. Cathy and George worked the cameras, Rachael as floor director, Shirley on the switcher as the technical director, Jimmy took up the position of audio engineer and yours truly as the director. Now on TV, the RealTV Jan 14 2004 Show is on MCTV15 in both Weed and Mount Shasta.

Fire in the Sky

I awakened this morning and saw one of the reddest glows to the sky and landscape that I have just about ever seen. I jumped from my bed to investigate and was blessed with a spectacular pre-sun raise display over Mt.Shasta.

I only wish mornings at this time were not so early! I guess going to bed around 3am and surfacing around 7:30am is not such a good idea.

Cable and Things

I went on a brief shopping trip this afternoon. Cables and connectors from Radio Shack ( Where else? ). Shoe polish, silk vines and a plastic coat rack from the dollar store. DVD's from Blockbuster. Sandwich from Subway. Dual head work lamp, power cords, power stripes, soap and some great music from Walmart.

Yes the music, Annie Lennox in her third solo album 'Bare'. Annie is one of the most powerful female vocalists. Her songs touch me at a very personal level. The other CD is from Sting one of his best ever. 'Scared Love' has song after song that reach out and grabs you.

MCTV15 Office Computer

Finally after a few months MCTV15 opertations manager has a computer to do some office work on. With the help of an old computer from Mount Shasta I was able to replace the computer for updating the switcher. That computer in now in the studio in Weed.

Northland Cable

I am hard working volunteer at MCTV15 I and a number of others attended a show and tell at Notherland Cable headend. We were there in part to understand the how the signals for channel15 are distributed in the community.

Lazy Day

It was another wonderful day, bright and sunny with crystal clear skies. The views of Mount Shasta were stunning. I grabbed my camera and went for a walk snapping as I went.

The afternoon was spent resting, playing on the web and not much else. I did catch 'Tom Cruise' in the actors studio. He is a very interesting guy and a good study.

Big Fish

Tim Burton knows how to put unusual images on the screen. This time he brings a delightful story to the screen about a son getting to know his father at the closing days of his father's life. Go and see it.

Snow is Cold

I had fun on my first visit to the Mount Shasta ice rink. There was huge piles of snow all around the rink which made it very difficult to find a good position to video the action. My leg would disappear in to the snow bank as I tried to walk around. A few times I would sink in all the way to my knees. My boots would fill with snow and one time almost lost my right boot. In total there were 4 cameras recording the figure skaters. I brought three cameras, two form MCTV15 and one off my own. George from the ice rink provided the 4th and had a volunteer to act as cameraman. Shirley used the Sony camcorder from the PEG on a tripod, Audra choose to go handheld with the new Cannon and I used my old Sony TRV 900? on a good tripod. The results showed the difference in cameras and what can happen then a tripod is not used! I hope to meet up with George next week to discuss the video editing process and help him prepare a tape for MCTV15.

Ice Rink

Another fine morning here is the banana belt. But wait can it be true, this fine morning seems to have spread to other areas including Mount Shasta. I am happy to see that, because at around noon today I will be at the ice rink to video some ice skaters.

I uploaded a few of my photos. Please check them out on my Photo Page.

New Video/Data Projector

Mark the UPS man brought me my new Sharp projector this afternoon. I hooked it up in minutes to my laptop. Wow the picture is very bright and clear. GotWiki demos will be great on this wonderful new toy.

New Computer for the Switcher

Good News, the computer that was made available by the City of Mount Shasta is now up and running with the switcher software. I will do some final clean up on Monday and get Vince and/or Judith to check out the new computer. I plan to replace the monitor with one from the studio in Weed.

I am off to Mount Shasta

Time to fix more computers.

MCTV15 Mount Shasta

The City of Mount Shasta are helping out MCTV15 with an old computer running Windows 95. This computer will be used to program the switcher. The sitcher controls the connected VCR's and selects which signal gets sent to be cable cast. I will be trying to setup the system this afternoon.
